Dr. Melissa Amundson received her bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her received her DDS from the University of Illinois-Chicago in 2007. She started her career in OMFS with an Internship at the University of Pennsylvania followed by her residency at The University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital in 2012. In 2015, she returned to an academic setting and completed her fellowship training in Advanced Craniomaxillofacial Surgery and Trauma in Portland, Oregon at the Head and Neck Institute/Legacy Emanuel Hospital. She received her Master’s in Public Health at the University of Florida in 2020.
In 2020 she relocated to Tallahassee, Florida where she treats maxillofacial trauma patients at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. She has spent the last 15 years focusing on trauma reconstruction, dental extractions, dental implant reconstruction, and jaw reconstruction. She is faculty at Florida State University College of Medicine in Tallahassee, Florida.
Dr Amundson is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and a Board Member of the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Florida Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and the Leon County Dental association among numerous other memberships and appointments. She is a reviewer for Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology and Oral Radiology, has authored/co-authored several articles and chapters on craniomaxillofacial trauma.
She is also a consulting surgeon at Hospital Escuela in Tegucigalpa, Honduras and for Médecins Sans Frontiers (Doctors Without Borders) where she is actively involved in both noma reconstruction and research in Sokoto, Nigeria. Her areas of interest include maxillofacial trauma, secondary reconstruction, and humanitarian/global surgery.
In her free time, she enjoys watching the local birds, traveling, and enjoying all that Tallahassee and the surrounding communities have to offer.
